A major resort island situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial array of amenities:

- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
