Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership

Board Resignation
The former official announced he would retreat from public roles after House committee released his regular messages with Epstein

One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.

Summers remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate following their progress".

The former Harvard president, who formerly led Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The newly public emails showed that Summers exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the AI firm said it respected his decision to step down.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," the company stated.

Congressional Action

This announcement comes after the two houses of Congress agreed on this week to approve a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to release its files on the case.

The bill will then move to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has stated he intends to approve the legislation, after reversing his position on the matter following pressure from his base.

Message Details

A group of Epstein-connected emails made public by the legislative panel days ago referenced multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.

The messages indicated that Summers and the financier dined together frequently, with Epstein often trying to introduce Summers to notable global figures.

Individual Statement

After the messages were released with the general audience, he expressed he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to continue communicating with the financier".

He added that he desired "to restore confidence and fix relationships with the persons closest to me".

Professional History

The professor occupied leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He presided over Harvard from five years and is still a academic there. When declaring his withdrawal from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, announced that he was not connected with the group.

He entered the leadership of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its top executive the company leader.
